The designs were inspired by the explorers as a collective, but also by the stories of some of the most outstanding of these intrepid travellers. They were driven by the allure of the unknown. They came not to conquer but to meticulously record the plants, trees and animals they encountered on their perilous journeys into the veld. It is thanks to their meticulous notes and diaries, as well as the beautiful and scientifically accurate watercolours that we get a glimpse of what the Cape looked like through their eyes several centuries ago.
