Weylandts began as a traditional furniture manufacturer in Windhoek Namibia, in 1964. Today the store has seven retail showrooms in South Africa and one in Melbourne, Australia.
The Weylandts aesthetic, initiated by Edgar Weylandt then later refined and curated by his son Chris Weylandt, marries Scandinavian design-mindedness with an African heartbeat.

In 1964, Edgar Weylandt opens the doors to the first Weylandts store. Situated in Windhoek, Namibia, this humble furniture retail store is the beginning of what is today an eight-store interior retail chain. In the same year, Edgar’s son, Chris Weylandt, is born.
Whilst living in South Africa, Chris pays his family a visit in Namibia en route to Europe. Taking an instant interest in the family business, Chris decides to stay in Namibia and work with his family. What was initially meant as a brief detour becomes five years of work experience in the family business.
Chris and his older brother, Thomas, buy a small manufacturing plant in Okahandja, Namibia. They expand the plant to meet the demand for stock in the Windhoek shop, as well as to export stock to South Africa.
Chris relocates back to South Africa and sets up a manufacturing plant in Cape Town. He develops and manufactures a complete new range of furniture and begins to supply to the major furniture retailers in South Africa.
Chris embarks on his first journey to source new products for Weylandts. His travels take him to Indonesia. Whilst there, Chris establishes contacts with whom he can design and produce new ranges for Weylandts.
Ready for a new challenge, Chris decides to take Weylandts into the retail arena. After buying property in Durbanville, Chris builds a 2 500m2, six-level destination retail outlet in this beautiful Cape Town suburb.
Chris opens the first Weylandts Homestore in Durbanville. Stocked with an extensive range of Indonesian furniture, as well as ranges designed, developed and manufactured by Weylandts, the store is an instant success.
A 3000m2 and three-level destination store opens in a renovated warehouse in Greenpoint. Showing Weylandts’ commitment to urban renewal, this industrial building complements the clean, contemporary furniture and interesting objects found within its walls.
Always on the lookout for inspiring pieces, Chris imports the Shell Chair from Denmark. Designed and produced in Denmark, this chair becomes an iconic piece amongst all the Weylandts ranges.
Inspired by simple, clean-lined European designs, the timeless Casa Range is designed, developed and launched by the Weylandts team.
The Knysna store opens in an old boatshed situated on the trendy Thesen Island. Weylandts once again breaks new ground as one of the first tenants in this new development.
Chris roams the East for inspiration and returns with the Steamer Lounger from Malaysia. It is an instant success and is still one of Weylandts’ most popular ICONIC imported pieces to date.
Weylandts opens for business in Fourways – the first expansion into Gauteng. This 3 500m2, three-level building offers Weylandts customers a unique shopping experience.
Inspired by Scandinavian design, the Solo Sofa is compact, clean and identified by its contemporary lines.
Chris travels to remote regions in China to source antiques. These feature items complement the clean, contemporary designs that have become synonymous with the Weylandts brand.
Situated in a beautiful old warehouse in the centre of town, this Weylandts store soon becomes a landmark in Swakopmund.
Weylandts starts importing vibrant and edgy designer pieces from the Philippines. One such piece is the award-winning Egg Table.
Weylandts co-sponsors the South African version of the reality TV show, The Block. Weylandts furniture is viewed by thousands of South Africans who follow the show.
Due to Chris’ travels, there is an ever-increasing stock of homeware from around the globe. To house this stock, the Weylandts Homeware Distribution Centre is opened in Cape Town.
In support of urban renewal, the Knysna store relocates to an industrial area. This move allows the store to become a bigger, freestanding destination store.
In response to the growing demand for Weylandts products in the greater Pretoria area, Weylandts Menlyn opens its doors.
In response to increased demands, Weylandts sets up a state-of-the-art Warehouse and Distribution Centre in Gauteng.
Recognising the individuality of Kenneth Cobonpue’s work, Weylandts becomes the sole distributor for Kenneth’s designs in Southern Africa.
To showcase Weylandts’ increased focus on designer pieces and unusual artworks sourced from around the world, the Durbanville store is completely renovated and relaunched as a white shell of the space which allows for innovative ways of merchandising products.
Returning to Europe for fresh inspiration, Chris imports teak ranges from Ethnicraft, the Belgium-based leading furniture manufacturer.
Always at the forefront of contemporary culture, Weylandts accepts an offer to sponsor the reality TV show, Big Brother Africa.
Weylandts is honoured with an invite to furnish the opening of the news network CNBC Africa, a prestigious event attended by influential people from all over the world, including our then president, Thabo Mbeki.
The Weylandts Knysna store relocates back to Thesen Island. The new premises are situated in what was originally a sawmill, complete with massive yellow wood beams.
Weylandts partners with House and Leisure magazine in a sponsorship of the much anticipated annual House of the Year awards.

In response to a huge customer demand, Weylandts opens its first KwaZulu-Natal outlet in Umhlanga Ridge on Friday 24 July. The Umhlanga Ridge branch, situated at 9 Tetford Circle near to Gateway shopping centre, boasts 1400m2 of architectural space which showcases Weylandts’ eclectic range of original designs, antique treasures and unexpected ethnic artworks.
